K'waahlghlda: The Wisdom of the Sea
Growing up on Haida Gwaii, the island is surrounded by the powerful Pacific ocean, I learned early on that the ocean is more than just a body of water. It's a living power source, a teacher, and a reflection of life's currents.
K’waahlgahlda’s Origins
The Haida people from Skidegate speak the Southern dialect of Xaayda Kil (Haida language). K'waahlgahlda translates to "Changing the Tide." But to me, it means much more—it encapsulates a deep-rooted connection to the ocean and a philosophy that has shaped my life.
Xaayda Kil has been documented, recorded, and revitalized by the commitment and dedication of the Elders of HlGaagilda X̱aayda Kil Naay (Skidegate Haida Immersion Program-SHIP). The language is not only surviving, it is thriving and through that the Haida people, art, and traditions are thriving, which ripples into the communities and celebration of Haida culture.
I have the privilege to enjoy the richness of my heritage and I am so grateful to all the Elders for their hard work and dedication to preserve and revitalize Xaayda Kil (Haida language). It has given me so much joy to weave it into my business and website.

The Creation & Evolution of K’waahlgahlda:
In the heartbeat of this Haida womxn, sea water runs in my veins, forever connected to the ocean. Within this deep connection, I found inspiration for the name K'waahlgahlda. With the guidance and support from my cousin Ashley, and an afternoon conversation we chose a name that speaks to the essence of control, influence, and the profound parallels between the ocean and life itself.
The tide, much like life, responds to our choices. It's a constant reminder of our free will—Sah ‘Laana (the Creator’s) greatest gift.
Mission and Heartfelt Purpose:
At the core of K'waahlgahlda is a mission that beats with a powerful rhythm: to live heart first and turn barriers to bridges. For me, this mission is personal. It stems from a unique upbringing that is being of two worlds and not feeling like I belonged to either of them; Indigenous and non-Indigenous worlds.
It's about creating bridges between minority and majority peoples, eliminating divisions, and celebrating the beauty of differences.
