Bridging Barriers: Cultural Ambassador & Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
I am a Haida Two Spirited womxn, and as a Cultural Ambassador, my role is to provide cultural resources, education, and support with the objective of shifting perspectives around the meaning of inclusion and equity.
Benefits and Roles of a Cultural Ambassador:
Cultural Ambassadorship is a powerful role that comes with a range of benefits and responsibilities. Let's explore some of these key aspects:
Authentic Representation: Cultural Ambassadors like me represent the rich tapestry of diversity within an organization. We serve as living embodiments of the unique cultures we represent, breaking down stereotypes and fostering understanding.
Clear & Concise Communication: We facilitate understanding and ensure everyone's voices are heard. We act as bridges between different cultural backgrounds and ensure that communication is effective and respectful.
Promoting Interests: We advocate for cultural understanding and support, not just for our own cultural group, but for the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion at large. Our mission is to foster appreciation for all cultures.
Negotiation and Mediation: We play a crucial role in bridging gaps and fostering mutual respect. In cases of cultural misunderstandings or conflicts, we step in as mediators, ensuring that resolution is fair and respectful.
Policies, Protocol, Strategies: Our input is invaluable in the development of inclusive practices within an organization. We contribute to the creation of policies, protocols, and strategies that promote diversity and inclusion.
Understanding the Vital Role of Culture:
Culture is a powerful, often invisible force that influences every aspect of our lives, both on a micro and macro scale. Everything is a relationship, and culture shapes our relationships with ourselves and others. In the business world, this understanding is crucial for:
Organizational Identity: Culture deeply affects the identity of a company. A diverse and inclusive culture leads to a more vibrant and dynamic organizational identity.
Employee Engagement: A culturally sensitive workplace fosters higher levels of engagement. Employees who feel understood and respected are more motivated and committed.
Communication: Effective communication relies on cultural sensitivity. Cultural Ambassadors help ensure that messages are received as intended.
Collaboration: Collaboration across cultural lines is enriched by our expertise. We facilitate teamwork and cooperation, leading to better outcomes.
Organizational Performance: A culturally diverse and inclusive environment enhances performance by tapping into a broader range of talents and perspectives.
Talent Attraction and Retention: Companies that value cultural diversity and inclusion are more likely to attract and retain top talent. Cultural Ambassadors play a key role in this process.
Customer Experience: Understanding the diverse backgrounds of customers leads to a better customer experience. Cultural Ambassadors help organizations connect with their customer base on a deeper level.
Personal Journey and Mission:
I have walked two worlds for most of my life, experiencing a duality in various aspects—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. My journey has led me to create K’waahlgahlda. I want to share my experiences, lessons learned, and offer guidance to support those feeling unwell in different dimensions of their lives.
Bringing balance and wellbeing to these areas can lead to power, peace, and gratitude, connecting to culture, traditional values, foods, rituals, and Indigenous languages—adding peace and joy to life.
Cultural Ambassador’s Role Within Your Organization:
As a Cultural Ambassador, my role is to provide guidance and support in navigating the complexities of workplace dynamics, especially when it comes to sensitive topics like race or LGBTQ+ issues. This role helps establish understanding and harmony, setting a higher standard for new policies.
Silence and inaction contribute to divide and inequity, both in the workplace and in communities. Cultural Ambassadors play a vital role in breaking down these barriers, promoting understanding, and creating more inclusive and equitable environments.
