K’waahlgahlda? I have walked two worlds for most of my life. There has been an ever present duality in all areas of my life; Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Wellbeing. In my journey I have been invited to be curious about my life and to see things from a different perspective. I do this by asking better questions to gain new understanding and insights, and by being flexible in observation, thought, and learning. This new perspective allowed me to recognize that duality provided an opportunity. An opportunity to connect to gifts; medicine, lessons, and to dissolve the walls of duality with love. I used the principal teachings of the medicine circle, Sg̱waansing K’uuga (Xaayda Kil Heart First), and the Watchmen. My current physical environment is different from my birthplace. I was raised on Haida Gwaii, a rugged rural island on the Pacific West Coast. Now I live in the Okanagan; hot, dry, and urban. As a child living on the Reservation (Skidegate), I experienced a loving village full of caring hearts and watchful eyes. As an adult living off reserve in the Okanagan, I found myself reconnecting to my culture, traditional values, wisdom of ancestors and carrying that forward. Each of these environments gave me access to new experiences and perspectives. Haida Gwaii has a culturally rich environment with potlatches and ceremonies occurring regularly. I attended Xaayda Kil (Haida) language classes from K-12 and extra First Nation studies in grade 10. I was also raised in a family that are practicing Jehovah’s Witnesses. I was limited in participating in cultural activities. Mentally I struggled with the core concepts and teachings of the religion. I wrestled with making decisions, I was very nervous of making the wrong choice, and fearful of the fallout that may come from it. We married in 2010, and in July 2016 we welcomed our daughter, Naya. Two worlds again appeared from these experiences. Growing up in an environment of conditional love, the religion, and not having an identity of my own. There was always something lacking or needing to be fixed about my behaviour, actions, presence, or thoughts. My wife and daughter guide me to seeing my own identity and they love me unconditionally. I hadn’t had much experience with unconditional love before that. I chose to turn away from fear, anger, resentment, and scarcity and turn towards love, peace, kindness, and abundance.
